From the beginning, Gossypium (now part of the hardbackhollow family) has been committed to making long-lasting ethical and natural clothing that feels exceptional to wear. Gossypium is committed to making yoga wear from the perfect blend of organic cotton, beechwood fibre and Lycra that you’ll feel happy wearing against your skin when you’re working up a sweat.
Gossypium is still one of the few clothing companies that offers soft, comfy yoga clothing in natural white.
Why wear white Kundalini clothing?
Some yoga practices, such as Kundalini, specify that the fabric worn to practice yoga in is as pure and natural as possible – and Kundalini practitioners also opt for all white. Kundalini master, Yogi Bhajan, who brought Kundalini yoga from India to the west in the 1960s, said that ‘the colour white represents the seven colours. Cotton is the flower of the Earth. It is good for your psyche, for your energy, and for your nervous system. Your way of dressing should be saintly and make you glow with grace.’
Whilst we might recognise Buddhist monks for their yellow or orange robes, white clothing is supposed to represent someone who is on a spiritual path but still engaging with the world around them. The spiritual theory is that white expands your auric field.
Give me the science!
To explain that idea in more scientific terms, the objects around us appear different colours because they absorb some colours and reflect others. The colours we see are the wavelengths that are reflected or transmitted.
Therefore, a red shirt looks red because the dye molecules in the fabric have absorbed the wavelengths of light from the violet/blue end of the spectrum. A black shirt absorbs all colours/light so no light is reflected. White objects are seen as white because they reflect all colours/light.
How different colours make you feel
Thinking about the idea of absorption versus reflection, we can begin to explore how these two states – absorbing or reflecting – might make us feel.
Perhaps you’ve had those days when you seem to be soaking up all the negative energy around you. Or conversely, a day when you feel light and clear-headed, able to navigate tricky situations with ease. It’s interesting to experiment with different coloured clothes to see how they make you feel and whether they help or hinder you.
Even if you normally balk at the idea of wearing white, Yogi Bhajan suggested trying it to feel the effects on the conscious and subconscious mind. White clothing is believed to strengthen one’s identity and serve as a filter for negative influences from the surrounding world.
Wearing white as a meditation
You’ll soon notice that wearing white requires a bit of extra attention too! As Yogi Bhajan pointed out, it takes more mindfulness and care to keep white clothes clean, so you can see wearing white as a personal meditation for the day.
Whatever your yoga practice, it’s worth giving the idea of white clothing a go, and seeing whether it gives your energy and life a boost.
The Gossypium Aspire Harem Pants and the Gossypium Aspire Cropped Harem Pants are both available in Natural White.
