I read this book too fast to make a Currently Reading. I’m sorry… but not really, because this book is BEAUTIFUL. Spoilers are ahead! This is Love & Gelato by Jenna Evans Welch.
It is largely reminiscent of books like Anna and the French Kiss and Isla and the Happily Ever After by Stephanie Perkins, but Welch puts her own beautiful twist to her stories that adds much more depth.
This story starts out by hitting you hard. Lina’s mom is going to die. She has pancreatic cancer. Lina is sent to Italy to live with her ‘father’ that she’s never met after her mother’s death, and there she finds many blessings.
Among these blessings are Ren, gelato, views of Florence, her mother’s secret journal of her time in Italy, and a man that may not be her real father, but is even better. Lina is swept into a word of scooters, parties in mansions, gingerbread houses that really exist, memorials, and early morning runs that she falls in love with. This book is full of charm, love, heartbreak, loss, and, of course, lots of gelato. I felt like I was strolling through Florence as I turned each page. I cannot recommend this book more, and I want to thank Jenna Evans Welch for sharing her love of Italy with us in this heartwarming and lovable novel.
